Discontent among CLC World staff?

Possible problems for Wyndham as hundreds of resort staff discuss potential strike action

CLC World fall from grace

Once the leader of timeshare sales in Europe, the beleaguered Club la Costa now faces bankruptcy after choosing to ignore legislation brought in to protect consumers for decades.

Claims firms have been successfully suing CLC World since 2016 and now the former timeshare giant owes around £150 million to mis-sold former members.

CLC have been desperately trying to avoid paying their creditors via doomed and transparent, timewasting tactics.

Wyndham takeover?

in October 2021 Club la Costa announced a vague sounding ‘strategic partnership’ with the world’s largest hotel group, Wyndham. They gave no further details regarding the new relationship between the two brands. Was it a buyout? Nobody was saying, and to this day nothing definitive has been publicly revealed.

What we do know is that all of CLC’s signage has been replaced with Wyndham branding, including the iconic giant sign on the seafront which has been swapped out completely for a similar style Wyndham sign. Resorts have also been renamed to feature the Wyndham brand.

Now you see me, now you don’t…

Unwelcome changes

Seemingly to align with CLC World’s position that they have no money, the tourist services management company employed to handle day to day operations in the former CLC resorts is said to be attempting to impose ‘draconian’ working conditions on the staff.

RMF Management handle cleaning, maintenance, reception and entertainment around the CLC complexes. And if the rumours are to be believed, the total staff numbers have been cut by a third from around 160 workers to under 100.

In order to accommodate this alleged workforce reduction, staff are said to have been asked by the company to work a demanding rota of eight days on with one day off. Paid annual vacation days are also claimed to have been reduced in an attempt to fill the work schedule with a smaller amount of staff.

Potential strike action?

Spain has incredibly robust employee protection laws, and RMF staff had a meeting on the 24th February 2024 in the Rancho restaurant to discuss these unwelcome changes. The restaurant is in the heart of the CLC world complexes and around 100 people attended. A union rep only identified as ‘Alex’ led proceedings and votes were held on multiple points that workers wanted to be put to RMF management.

According to an RMF insider who wishes to remain anonymous, if the management team at RMF refuse to employ more staff instead of making what the workers see as unreasonable and unfair demands on their time, then measures up to and including all out strike action may be considered.

More on this story as it develops.

Unhappy CLC owner?

It is no secret that standards have been dropping across CLC resorts in Spain following the cessation of new timeshare sales.

Now that resorts are not being used as showrooms for sales presentations, the financial motivation is for the resort to cut corners where possible and suddenly the ‘5 star resort’ people paid tens of thousands of pounds to join is not only looking a little shabbier, but is now available to non members on Booking.com and similar sites.
